“You didn’t fall out of love with your book. You fell into the part that’s hard. Hard and boring are not the same as wrong. Keep going.”

— L.A. Walton, The Book Maven

You started this project with fireworks. The idea was electric. The characters were alive. You were writing at 2 AM because you couldn’t stop. And then… somewhere around Chapter 12 or Draft 3 or Act 2… the magic evaporated. The story feels stale. The characters feel flat. And that shiny new idea over there looks really, REALLY tempting.

You haven’t lost your passion. Your passion is just hiding under the couch cushions of difficulty, boredom, and self-doubt. Let me help you fish it out.

Why Passion Fades (It’s Normal, Not Terminal)

StageYour Passion LevelWhat’s Actually Happening
The Idea⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Dopamine rush. Everything feels possible.
First 25%⭐⭐⭐⭐Still exciting. World is fresh.
The Middle⭐⭐The novelty has worn off. The work is just… work.
75% Done⭐⭐⭐Light at the end of the tunnel. Motivation returns.
Finishing⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐The rush of completion. Worth every hard chapter.

How to Reignite the Spark

  1. Reread your best scene. Go back to the part you love most. Remember why you started. Let that energy carry you forward.
  2. Skip to a scene that excites you. You don’t have to write in order. Write the fun part, then connect the dots later.
  3. Talk about your project with someone who’s enthusiastic. Sometimes you need to see your story through someone else’s excited eyes.
  4. Take a structured break—not an abandonment. Set a specific return date. A break with a deadline is a rest. A break without one is quitting.
  5. Remember your WHY. Why did you start this project? Who is it for? What will it feel like when it’s done? Write those answers down and tape them to your desk.

Your Move, Creative

Open the project you’ve been avoiding. Read the last thing you wrote. Then write the NEXT sentence. Just one. Feel the momentum start to build. The passion isn’t gone—it’s waiting for you to show up.

Stop letting your stories stay stuck.
